What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which a person’s breathing stops and starts repeatedly throughout the night. Waking up exhausted after sleeping a full night could mean you’ve got sleep apnea.

There are different types, but our office is focused on one of the most common: obstructive sleep apnea. This type occurs when the muscles of the throat relax and narrow or block your airway. Your brain notices what is going on and briefly wakes you so that you can get some air. You may wake up gasping for air or even choking. Or, you may not.

Either way, this cycle happens over and over throughout the night – sometimes 30 or more times. It’s no wonder why those who have sleep apnea never feel rested!

Signs You Need Sleep Apnea Treatment

If you have sleep apnea, then you need to seek treatment. Pay attention to these signs and see if they apply to you:

  • Snoring loudly
  • Waking up throughout the night gasping for air
  • Dry mouth upon waking
  • Morning headache
  • Overly tired during the day
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Easily irritated

Why Choose North Shore Prosthodontic Associates?

At North Shore Prosthodontic Associates, we take sleep – and sleep apnea seriously. We have invested in the right technology and treatments to help those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea get a better night’s sleep.

Using Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) patients suffering from sleep apnea can easily have their symptoms alleviated. We create a custom-fitted oral appliance for you to wear while you are sleeping to help open your airway – and it is a much more comfortable option than the bulky CPAP machines.

FAQs

What is the main cause of sleep apnea?

There can be various causes of obstructive sleep apnea, but the most common is excessive weight and obesity.

What does untreated sleep apnea feel like?

If you are suffering from sleep apnea and have not sought treatment, you may wake up choking or gasping for air. You may wake up in the morning with a headache, dry mouth, or sore throat. You may also feel restless at night, as if you have insomnia.

What if you don’t seek treatment for sleep apnea?

Leaving sleep apnea untreated can lead to loud snoring, daytime tiredness, increased blood pressure, or serious cardiac issues. It will not go away on its own, but lifestyle changes and shedding weight may help reduce or even alleviate the symptoms.

How does Oral Appliance Therapy work for sleep apnea?

This appliance positions the lower jaw and tongue in a way that minimizes obstruction – keeping you breathing freely.
